This pair of textiles consists of Chinese Silk Embroidered Sleeve Bands (Xiuquan), dating to the Late Qing Dynasty (19th century). Each band measures 37 x 6 inches and would have been stitched onto the wide, turned-back cuffs of a woman’s formal robe.


These two vertical panels feature a vibrant and classic "blue-and-white" aesthetic, set against a warm salmon-pink silk satin ground. The design is highly symmetrical, intended to mirror one another when worn on the left and right sleeves.
Key Visual & Symbolic Elements:
  • Peonies in Bloom: The central motif features large, multi-petaled peonies. In Chinese art, the peony represents wealth, honor, and feminine beauty.
  • Butterfly Motifs: Interspersed among the flowers are large, stylized butterflies. The butterfly is a symbol of conjugal felicity and joy, making these bands appropriate for a wedding or celebratory garment.
  • Color Palette: The use of multiple shades of indigo and azure blue on a pink ground was a popular late-Qing color combination, often reflecting the influence of imported dyes and porcelain aesthetics.
  • Intricate Borders: Each panel is framed by a secondary dark blue border featuring scrolling floral vines and "Buddha's Hand" citrons, which symbolize blessings and longevity.

Technique and Artistry

  • Satin Stitch: The flowers and butterfly wings are rendered in long, smooth satin stitches to create a lustrous, gradient effect known as "shading" (halun).
  • Couching and Stem Stitch: The delicate antennae of the butterflies and the outlines of the leaves are executed with fine couched threads and stem stitching to provide crisp, defined edges.
  • Appliqué Appearance: The main motifs have a bold, slightly raised appearance that makes them stand out sharply against the pink background.

  • Age and Wear: The bands show minor age-related wear, including slight thinning of the silk satin in the unembroidered areas.
  • Preservation: The blue silk embroidery remains remarkably vibrant, with very little fading or loose threads, which is excellent for a textile of this age.
