Measuring 25 x 13 inches, this textile features two elongated vertical bands traditionally used to adorn the wide sleeves of Han Chinese robes. The bands are set against a cream-colored silk gauze ground, which was a popular choice for summer-weight garments.
Visual & Symbolic Narrative:
  • The Main Scene: The embroidery depicts a serene landscape of scholars and figures engaged in refined activities—reading, painting, and drinking tea—amidst pavilions, bridges, and weeping willows.
  • Auspicious Symbols:
    • The Scholar-Official: Represents the aspiration for high social status and wisdom.
    • Pagodas and Bridges: Symbolize the journey toward enlightenment or crossing into a higher state of being.
    • The Sun/Moon: Red circular motifs in the sky signify cosmic harmony.
  • Border Details: The panels are framed by a multi-layered border, including a delicate "geometric" ribbon and a wider peripheral band filled with miniature landscape scenes of mountains and temples.

Technique and Artistry

  • Forbidden Stitch (Peking Knot): Upon close inspection, many of the flowers and garment details are rendered in "Forbidden Stitch"—tiny, precise knots that create a pebbled, three-dimensional texture.
  • Satin Stitch: Used for the larger areas of foliage and figure robes to provide a smooth, lustrous contrast to the gauze background.
  • Indigo Palette: The work features a classic late-Qing color scheme of various shades of indigo blue, complemented by muted greens, pinks, and terracotta.

Condition Report

  • Wear and Aging: As noted, there are minor worn areas consistent with historical use. The central seam where the two bands were joined shows some slight pulling, and there is light surface soiling characteristic of antique silk gauze.
  • Mounting: The panels have been expertly preserved by being sewn onto a larger textile frame, which stabilizes the fragile gauze and makes it suitable for framing.
