This garment is a Late Qing Dynasty Chinese Silk Embroidered Woman’s Informal Vest (Kanjia). Measuring 20 x 24 inches, this sleeveless vest was designed to be worn over a long-sleeved robe, providing an extra layer of warmth and decoration while allowing the embroidered sleeve bands of the undergarment to remain visible.

The vest is constructed from a rich cerulean blue silk satin and features a side-fastening front (pianjin) typical of Han Chinese costume. It is bordered with a simple, elegant dark silk binding that emphasizes its clean silhouette.

  • The Auspicious Crane: The primary motif features several Red-Crowned Cranes in various states of flight and rest. In Chinese culture, the crane is a powerful symbol of longevity, wisdom, and peace.
