This is a highly collectible piece by the renowned Southwestern artist Carol Felley. Known for her evocative, symbolic designs, Felley’s "Storyteller" series is among her most celebrated work, blending contemporary jewelry aesthetics with traditional Native American storytelling themes.
This sterling silver cuff is a sculptural narrative piece that utilizes a three-dimensional appliqué technique to tell a story across the wrist. Dating from 1989, it represents Felley’s peak period of production in her Albuquerque, New Mexico studio.
Key Design Elements:
The Storyteller Figure: The central focus is a stylized figure, often depicted with an open mouth to represent the "breath of life" and the oral tradition of passing down history and legends.
Dimensional Symbolism: Surrounding the central figure are various totemic or celestial symbols (which can include the moon, stars, or desert flora), all soldered onto the main band to create a "shadowbox" effect with significant depth.
Hand-Finished Texture: The silver features a combination of high-polish highlights on the raised figures and a deep, oxidized (blackened) background to emphasize the details of the narrative.
The Band: Unlike traditional Navajo cuffs, Felley's bands often feature an organic, slightly undulating edge that mimics the natural landscape of the Southwest.
