This exceptionally long 19th to early 20th-century Chinese textile, measuring 168 x 24.5 inches, is a vibrant ceremonial hanging. Unlike many surviving examples that have been cut down, this panel appears to retain its original horizontal format, showcasing a continuous narrative of high-relief silk embroidery on a traditional red felt ground.

Narrative & Iconography

The embroidery depicts a gathering of auspicious figures and legendary scenes, meticulously rendered in silk satin stitch and couched threads:
  • Central Focal Point: A grand architectural pavilion houses an assembly of high-ranking officials and deities. The central figures likely represent the Sanxing (Three Stars): Fu (Prosperity), Lu (Status), and Shou (Longevity), flanked by attendants and banners.
  • The Eight Immortals & Attendants: To the left and right, various mythological figures—including an elder in a cart and a traveler on a horse—traverse a landscape filled with stylized pine trees and blossoming peach boughs, both classic symbols of eternal life.
  • Auspicious Symbols: The upper register features the Eight Buddhist Treasures (Ba Jixiang), including the Lotus and the Conch Shell, floating amid clouds.
  • Decorative Border: The panel is finished with its original green silk knotted-fringe valance, accented with metallic sequins and decorative "pan chang" (endless knot) tassels along the bottom edge.

Condition & Construction

  • Technique: Multi-colored silk embroidery using satin, chain, and forbidden stitches, often layered to create a three-dimensional effect against the sturdy felt.
  • Format: At over 14 feet long, this was likely a hall hanging or "Huxi" used during birthdays, weddings, or New Year celebrations to bring good fortune to a household.
  • Condition Report: Good antique condition. While the overall visual impact remains strong, please expect silk loss and fraying to some embroidered elements, localized thinning or small holes in the red felt, and natural oxidation to the metallic sequins consistent with a century of use.
