Narrative & Iconography

• Central Motif: A majestic elephant carrying a vase of auspicious greenery, symbolizing "peace and good fortune" (taiping youxiang), accompanied by a playful blue Shi-Shi (Buddhist Lion).
• Auspicious Figures: The long horizontal field features the Eight Immortals or similar mythological figures, each carrying their distinctive attributes amidst flowering plum trees and peach branches (symbols of longevity).
• The Eight Buddhist Treasures: The upper register is adorned with floating emblems like the Endless Knot and the Conch Shell, signifying spiritual victory and luck.
• Finishing: The bottom edge features a decorative green silk netting with metallic sequins and knotted tassels, adding movement and texture.

Condition & Format

• Construction: Expertly executed using a variety of stitches, including satin stitch and couched metallic threads, creating a high-relief effect against the red felt.
• Format: The proportions suggest this may have been reduced in height or was part of a larger architectural set (such as a theater valance or a bridal bed hanging).
